Do Permanent Lights Hold Up to Utah Snow and Ice?

Permanent roofline lights are made to stay up all year, and the housing is waterproof and sealed with anti-UV protection. That is the design intent behind a system that does not come down for winter. What we do not do is make blanket promises about every roof and every storm, so the specifics for your house get checked in person at the free design consult.

What "Built to Stay Up" Actually Means

A clip-on string of lights is made to be hung and taken down. A permanent system is a different product. It is a slim LED track, installed by a professional crew, that sits flush along the roofline and is meant to be there in every season. Three features do most of the work.

  • Waterproof, sealed housing. The track is sealed against moisture, which matters in a place where rain, snow, and melting snow all show up in the same year.
  • Anti-UV protection. Sun exposure matters as much as snow,, and the housing is built with anti-UV protection.
  • Low-profile, flush mount. The track sits tight along the roofline instead of hanging off it, which keeps the footprint small.

The LEDs themselves are rated for 50,000-plus hours.

Why Mounted Is Different From Hung

The yearly string-light routine happens at the worst possible moment: cold, early dark, and a roof edge that may be wet or icy. Mounted hardware removes that routine. It stays up year-round, so nothing comes down in January. If you want the human side of that argument, read our post on why permanent lights beat climbing an icy roof.

What We Do Not Claim

Utah roofs vary a great deal. A Park City mountain home, a Sugar House bungalow, and a Daybreak new build all see winter differently. For that reason we do not publish temperature ratings, load ratings, or promises about how a given roof sheds snow. Those depend on the roof, the pitch, whether you already have snow guards or heat cable, and what the track is mounted to. We would rather look at your house than guess.

If you live in a high-snow area, such as Park City, that in-person check is especially worth having. Tell us about any snow guards, heat cable, or past roof issues at the consult.

Zones Shape the Look

The system is controlled in zones from the app. Zones are also how you shape the look: front peak, garage, porch, each with its own color and schedule.

What Happens at the Free Design Consult

  1. We walk your roofline and look at the fascia and eaves.
  2. You tell us about snow guards, heat cable, trees, or any area of concern.
  3. We map zones and choose a mounting plan.
  4. You pick the looks you want, from warm white to team colors to holiday scenes.

Then a professional crew handles the install, and you do not need a ladder. For the broader picture of how the system works across the metro, see our permanent outdoor lighting overview.

The Short Version

Permanent lights are designed for year-round use, with a waterproof, sealed, anti-UV housing and a flush mount. They are not a seasonal decoration that comes inside. For anything more specific about your own roof, ask us at the consult and we will look at it with you. You can start with a free design consult.
