Can Permanent Lights Go on a Steep Utah Roof?
Steep roofs are a normal part of installing permanent lighting along the Wasatch Front, and the work is done by a professional crew so the homeowner never goes up there. How a particular steep roof is handled depends on the pitch, the eaves, and what is already on it, which is why we confirm the plan in person at the free design consult rather than from a photo.
Steep Roofs Along the Wasatch Front
Some Utah homes have pitched roofs with real height to them, such as on hillside lots and in mountain-town areas like Park City and the foothills of Draper and Sandy. Some homes have several gables, dormers, and a garage wing that add roof edges. More roof edges means more places a string of lights would need hand-hanging, and a professional install means you do not hand-hang any of them. The fit for your roof is checked at your free design consult.
What a Professional Install Handles
The track is installed by a professional crew along the roofline, flush, and color-matched to your trim. You do not get on a ladder, and you do not hire a separate person to hang lights at the edge. What the crew needs to know is the shape of the roof: where the pitches meet, where the eaves are deep, and where a run should break into a new zone.
Our install steps follow the same order whether the roof is a single low gable or a complicated multi-level design.
Deep Eaves, Heat Cable, and Snow Guards
Many Utah roofs have extras: deep eaves, heat cable along the edge, or snow guards on the slope. Each is checked at the design consult. If your roof has any of these, tell us about them then.
Zones Handle Complicated Roofs
A complicated roof is where zones earn their keep. A front gable can run a team color while the garage stays warm white. A second story can match the first or contrast with it. Each zone has its own color and schedule in the app, so the roof can look the way you want without being one uniform strip. For examples of what that looks like in a hillside town, read about Draper.
What We Do Not Say
We do not publish load ratings, wind ratings, or temperature ratings, and we do not predict how any roof sheds snow. Those depend on your particular house. What we can say is that the housing is waterproof, sealed, and anti-UV, the track mounts flush, and the LEDs are rated for 50,000-plus hours.
Steep Does Not Mean Hard to Control
One worry we hear is that a tall or complicated roof will mean a complicated app. It does not. You see the zones as a short list on your phone, named whatever you like, such as Front Peak, Garage, or Porch. Pick a color, pick a schedule, and you are done. The complexity of the roof is handled once, at install, by the crew, and the app stays simple for everyone in the house.
How to Prepare for the Consult
- Note the roof edges you want lit: front only, front and sides, or the full perimeter.
- Tell us about snow guards, heat cable, or past roof work.
- Think about the scenes you want: warm white, team colors, holidays.
- Check your HOA or design review rules if you have them.

Questions
Does a steep roof change how permanent lights are installed?
It can change the mounting plan, which we confirm in person at the free design consult. The install is done by professionals, so the homeowner does not need a ladder.
What if my roof already has heat cable or snow guards?
Tell us about it at the design consult, where we look at your roof in person.
Can different parts of a complicated roof have different colors?
Yes. The system runs in zones, so a front gable, garage, and porch can each have their own color and schedule from the app.
